Sport & Fitness reduces plastic use

POSTED Monday 7 October 2019

From Thursday 10 October, Sport & Fitness will no longer be offering the blue plastic pool over-shoes for members and visitors to the pool. This is in line with the University’s ‘Live Well, Be Safe’ event, which focuses on sustainability, safety and wellbeing.

To help us reduce the amount of plastic we use, members are welcome to wear their own clean, indoor footwear to wear past the pool barriers, or to go barefoot. If you’ve not got any appropriate footwear, please visit our Reception, to see our reusable flip-flops and sliders.

Last year, Sport & Fitness used over 80,000 disposable pool over-shoes, which in this environmentally-conscious time is just too much plastic. Sport & Fitness will stop offering the single-use pool shoes, and will be encouraging members to bring their own indoor footwear, as well as offering the chance to buy reusable water bottles and towels – to hopefully help also reduce the amount of paper towels we use in the building. On average, 5 large rolls of towels are used per day in the gym, which amounts to 1,800 a year! Let’s stop the waste, and reduce our plastic usage!
