We are an incredibly active club that strives to bring people of all abilities together to teach and improve skills. We cater for all skill levels from complete novices to experts. We have three 90 minute pool sessions a week with regular canal sessions where you can receive training from our very friendly coaches or you can take a relaxed trip along the Birmingham canals!

Regular pool sessions are run to teach the basic skills needed to progress in many different areas such as rivers, canoe polo, slalom and so on!

All our coaching is done within the club, and we are very lucky to have enthusiastic qualified coaches, as well as great river leaders. The club is involved in 4 competitive disciplines, the BUCS recognised White Water Race, Slalom, Canoe Polo and National Student Rodeo. The club goes on weekly river trips all over the UK and organises two longer trips every year to Scotland over Easter holidays and to the Alps during the summer. We start the year with some fantastic beginner trips under friendly guidance of our coaches, and as your confidence grows, you are most welcome to sign up to more technical, exciting and crazy adventures!

We also play Canoe Polo within the club and participate in many university competitions catered for beginners and for those who already play at the highest level. These include Paddlington, Cardiff, BUCS, Warwick competitions and Regional Division 3.

We are also a really friendly and welcoming bunch of people and there is a massive social aspect to the club which includes loads of sober socials as well!

So welcome to the University of Birmingham Kayak club – where ability always come second to willingness to have a go!

Club highlight

Personally, I would say it was competing in one of the Warwick Tournaments for Canoe Polo. It was the first time in a year of playing Canoe Polo that I scored a goal AND perfected my hand roll after loads of practice. Although we did not win, I had the greatest time with both the ladies and the B team and I had the chance to practice reffing games. I just remember so much laughter, eating so much cake and party rings and feeling really happy being surrounded by the people who have made my university experience so wonderful!

Level of competition/participation:

Canoe Polo:
The A Team – BUCS league
The B Team – BUCS league
The Ladies team – BUCS league

Whitewater:
We have great river weekends where we are joined by lots of different Universities at Teifi and NSR where you compete to hopefully win prizes for your club and yourself, and to have lots of fun!
