Taekwondo

Taekwondo, a Korean martial art renowned for its kicking, means “the way of the foot and fist”. We are an active, diverse and supportive club catering to everyone from beginners to black belts. The club trains on a regular basis up to three times a week and focuses on WT (Olympic style) Taekwondo but accommodates ITF and other styles too. Our yearly activities include competitions in sparring (Kyorugi) and patterns (Poomsae) on student and non-student level, grading every term, demonstration performances, seminars, fundraising and socials.

In training, we work on fitness and flexibility, drill on kick pads, practise traditional patterns, combat-style sparring and self-defence. When you join our club, you are joining a community, not just a sport – make new friends and have fun with us!

Everyone’s first two sessions are free, so join us to get stronger, faster and fitter whilst learning an Olympic sport.

How to get involved

REGISTER INTEREST

We have several membership options to suit you: full membership of 3 training sessions a week, half membership for 1 training session a week, or pay-per-session. Anyone can pay membership at UoB Sport & Fitness Club reception. UoB students can pay for membership online. Contact us by Facebook or email for more information.

Please note that on top of the club fee there is a £16 fee that covers personal accident insurance when training or competing for the University, access to free cross-training sessions such as circuits and yoga, as well as a contribution to the costs of affiliation to various national governing bodies.  This fee is only payable once so if you did decide to join a second club then you would not need to pay a second fee.

Please arrive early to get changed and help set up mats for a prompt start.

Level of competition/participation:
We compete in every British Student Taekwondo Federation competition in both sparring and patterns. These are hosted in Birmingham, Nottingham, Worcester and Imperial College.

Interesting facts

We had one competitor from the club participating in the 2019 World Championships Taekwondo Kyorugi in Manchester.

We have one competitor participating in the Universiade in Kyorugi (WT style) in Naples in July 2019.

We have one competitor participating in the EUSA Poomsae Championships (European Championships for students) in Zagreb in August 2019.

One of our members is on track to compete in Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
