Badminton dominate in early games

The Women’s 2nd and Men’s 2nd and 3rd Badminton teams all recorded conclusive 8-0 victories over three teams from different universities in an afternoon of wall-to-wall badminton in UB Sport and Fitness.

Staffordshire University were the opposition for the Men’s 2nd team in the Midlands 2A Badminton League. Two freshers, Will Tuson and Owen Edwards, showed that the future of Birmingham badminton is in capable hands as they displayed great composure to come away with victories despite the pressure of playing in their first BUCS singles matches. The away side had a couple of strong doubles pairings but the Lions played great badminton to put them to the sword and start their season in the best possible manner.

The Women’s 2s faced up against the University of East Anglia in the Midlands 1A League and played in a similarly convincing way to also come away with a clean sweep of victories. East Anglia played well in their singles matches, including taking Elise Dixon to three sets in one of her games, but were unable to secure any wins in their match up. The Men’s 3s featured a number of new faces in their games against the University of Derby, but it was returner Sam Field who impressed the most as he recorded his first victory as a Lion after a year of playing on the team.

The wins were comfortable in the end, but it was great to see such enthusiasm and strength on display, especially from the new players as all three times recorded a perfect start to their campaigns. Next Wednesday the Men’s and Women’s Badminton 1s play home fixtures against Sheffield Hallam and the University of Derby and we hope they can continue the winning form!
