Semi Final Success for BUCS Teams

It was an exciting Wednesday of BUCS fixtures this week, with three of the four teams competing for a spot at the BUCS Big Wednesday on the 27 March winning their matches.

In an exciting game at Sport and Fitness, the Women’s 1s beat Bath 60-42. Spurred on by the cheering crowd, they flew out of the blocks into an early 9-1 lead. Kat Short was on fire, scoring most of the goals in the first quarter as Birmingham pulled ahead of their Premier South counterparts. Bath eventually grew into the game but the damage was already done, and the hosts’ quality ensured a comfortable victory. This sets up a Championship final against Hertfordshire, who pipped Bath to the Premier South league on goal difference. Hertfordshire are also the reigning Championship winners, so it promises to be a pulsating fixture.

The Women’s 1s hosted Edinburgh in their Championship semi final, a team they were unbeaten against in their league campaign. In the league home fixture the team won 3-2, and the result was by the same margin as they beat the Scottish university 2-1 to set up their 10th final appearance in 11 years. A classic midlands rivalry will be reignited in the final, with Birmingham facing off against Loughborough. In the regular league season Loughborough beat and drew with Birmingham finishing 6 points ahead of them as champions, so the team will be hungry for revenge in a fortnight’s time!

The Men’s 1s played midlands rivals Nottingham in their Championship semi final and narrowly won 3-2. Last year the team only got to Round 3 of the competition, so to get to the final this year is a massive achievement! Their opponent has not yet been confirmed, but whoever it is will face a tough challenge from the Lions.

It was a long journey up to Edinburgh for their semi final, and the Women’s 1s were unlucky to lose 5-0 to tricky opposition.

Next week the Women’s 1s Rugby Union team will also look to book their place at the BUCS Big Wednesday. Their semi final is against Oxford 1s on Bournbrook 3G at 6:15, so get down there to cheer the team on!
