Men’s basketball hit the ground running

Both the Men’s 1st and 2nd Basketball teams started the BUCS season with impressive victories but in different ways!

The 1st team produced a dominant performance as they travelled away to convincingly beat University of Worcester’s 3rd team 79-28. The 51 point win away from home was built on outstanding defence as Birmingham only allowed the hosts 2 points in the first half. There were notable performances from Mase Poole with game high of 17 points and Shamel Kamel with a double-double of 12 points and 23 rebounds.

1st team Coach and former GB Basketball player Michael Gayle wanted to prove a point to the league that Birmingham is a force to be reckoned with and his team did that with an outstanding 51 point victory!

For the 2nd team, they needed overtime to beat a spirited University of Nottingham 3rd team. Birmingham looked like they were going to win in regulation, but a buzzer beater from the visitors meant that an extra 5 minutes were required to separate the two sides. Buoyed on by the support of the crowd, Birmingham managed to pull out the victory in overtime, eventually winning 73-70. There was an impressive scoring spurt from Sammy Jacobs who managed back-to-back 3 pointers during the narrow victory.
