Sailing Success at BUSA

On the weekend of the 3rd of February, UoB Sailing Club sent three teams to the British Universities Sailing Association (BUSA) qualifiers at Grafham Water Sailing Club. The aim was to get through to the BUSA finals which take place over Easter.

Saturday racing was abandoned due to lack of wind, therefore the team arrived on Sunday with high hopes and much adrenaline with the hope of putting their hard work in January training into practice.

All three Birmingham teams managed to produce some amazing results. Birmingham White finished 2nd, winning 9 out of their 10 races, losing only to the Birmingham Black team. Birmingham Red finished 4th, winning 8 out of 10 races. This meant that both teams qualified straight through to the BUSA finals! Birmingham Black team finished 8th, winning 6 out of their 10 races, but sadly they lost out on a spot at playoffs by a single race win.

These are the best results the club has had at qualifiers in recent history and the team were so happy to end on a massive high! The team feel that they owe their great success to Niall Houston’s excellent coaching throughout the cold January months.

Particular highlights from the event include Sam Barson pulling off a crazy manoeuvre to save a race against Nottingham, Harry Gilchrist substituting in at the last minute and still managing to perform incredibly and all of the close races between the Birmingham teams!
