Swimmers perform at BUCS short course

Following the regional short course success last week, the UoB Swimming squad travelled to Sheffield to compete at the BUCS short course competitions. It was a great weekend of swimming, with the six members of the team qualifying for the Swim England national championships across 28 events.

Jess Shaw achieved the following results:

  • 6th in 50m Backstroke; 28.28 (Qualified for British Winter National competition) (New Club Record)
  • 6th in 100m Backstroke; 1:01.06 (Qualified for British Winter National competition)

Issy Griffiths swam very well and is ahead of her training schedule:

  • 5th in 800m Freestyle; 8:47.71
  • 7th in 400m Freestyle; 4:18.04 (Qualified for British Winter National competition)

Eleanor Morris also swam well:

  • 7th in 400m Individual Medley; 5:02.60 (New Club Record)

Liam Snook, a swimming scholar:

  • 13th in 400m Freestyle 4:01.99
  • 1oth in 1500m Freestyle 16:05.75 (New Club Record)

Will Slawson, who swam last week:

  • 7th in 400m Individual Medley; (Qualified for British Winter National competition) (New Club Record)

Holly Hildrew, after one and a half years out of the sport:

  • 1st (B Final) in 50m Fly stroke; 28.82

There were also great swims for the Women’s team as a whole:

  • 7th in 200m Team Freestyle; 1:47.79
  • 6th in 200m Team Medley; 1:56.70

Overall, it was a great performance from the whole swimming squad, in a much more competitive field than previous years due to the limit on two swimmers maximum per university rule being lifted. The team came 8th in the final standings, with the Women’s team coming 5th.
