Seven members of the University of Birmingham Taekwondo Club recently fought in the British Student Taekwondo Federation Lion’s Cup, a sparring tournament in the style of World Taekwondo. Antony Duff, Dan Wallace, Tom O’Sullivan, Henry Yao, Hettie Martin, Osanne Gbayere and Justin Tan – all coached by Hamid Ghayoorzadeh and Tom Hughes – headed to Nottingham to take part.
With their skill, hard work and determination they managed to rake in an impressive medal haul. Osanne sailed through his fight with plenty of energy left to spare to win the Gold. Anthony, Dan, Tom and Henry all won Silver in their respective fights. A particular highlight was a sudden death round for Dan when his third round ended with a 14 point draw. Hettie, who has recently participated in Army taekwondo trials, competed in both poomse (patterns) as well as sparring and consequently came home with a Bronze medal.
For many of the fighters, this was their first Taekwondo tournament after their first grading. We look forward to seeing all of them achieve even more at Nationals next month! For more information on the University of Birmingham Taekwondo Club click here.
