University of Birmingham Sport has a dedicated team offering volunteering opportunities to get involved with during your time here. Volunteering is known to help with future employment, and our Extra Mile programme is the perfect way to get involved!

We offer a wide range of volunteering opportunities that are tailored to suit our students’ busy timetables. These can range from school sport competitions, primary school sport festivals, Great Birmingham Run and many more!

These opportunities are available for all University of Birmingham students, regardless of sporting ability or course. Previous volunteers have helped with coaching, events, open days and also assisting the Jamaican Olympic Team while they trained for World Championships 2017. By joining the Extra Mile and recording volunteering hours, volunteers can receive:

  • A volunteer bag (1 hour)
  • A volunteer t-shirt (10 hours)
  • A chance to apply for a bursary worth up to £150 (30 hours)

British Junior Squash : January 2020

The British Junior Open (BJO) is one of the most prestigious events on the junior squash calendar attracting the best young prospects from around the world.
The tournament will be held across four venues in January. It attracts more than 400 competitors, representing over 30 nations competing in ten age categories from the Under 11s to the Under 19s for both boys and girls. Register your interest here.

The Nature Valley Classic, WTA Premier women’s grass-court tennis tournament at Edgbaston Priory Club, Sir Harry’s Road, Birmingham, B15 2UZ: Saturday 15 – Sunday 23 June 2019. 

The Team Classic volunteers are the friendly face of the event and play a vital role in delivering a major international tournament. They ensure everyone who attends has an experience they’ll never forget by creating a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere and always being on hand to help. Apply online here. British Blind Sport National Youth Swim Gala 2019: Saturday, 30th March 2019 12:30pm – 5pm

This event has been held successfully for over 20 years and is the only Visual impaired specific youth swimming competition in the UK, always attracting participants from across the country. Open to all abilities, whether you are a beginner or competitive swimmer. Roles available: Timekeeper (3 roles available), Tappers & Timekeepers Assistant (4 roles available), Call to Race (2 roles available). Guaranteed training available through the Coaching People with a Visual Impairment in Sport and Physical Activity Workshop. To register your interest please sign up here. Warwickshire Bears wheelchair basketball League match vs Coventry: Saturday 6th April 12.30-8pm

This is a unique opportunity to volunteer on a televised event.  Roles may range from stewarding, being a runner and setting up and down the venue.  Limited spaces are available.  If you are interested, please sign up here.


The Extra Mile will be offering development sessions, which will help students to gain extra experience for the future. Each session will be capped and will be booked on a first come first, served basis.
