Fencing

Student Club

The Fencing Club is an inclusive, vibrant, competitive community. Whether you want to try out a fun new sport, fence recreationally as a social sport, or try out for our teams to represent the University, we are the club for you. Come during the first two weeks of Autumn Term to our taster sessions to experience what the UoB Fencing Club is all about!

We have many different styles of training, to ensure everyone at every level gets the best training for them. Whether it’s sparring, group sessions or one-on-one lessons with our excellent coaches, you are guaranteed to develop your skills and passion for the sport throughout the year. We welcome both beginners and experienced fencers: we have a beginner course running through both semesters, and we also have teams competing in BUCS. Our Women’s 1s are in Premier North, and our Men’s 1s are in Midlands Tier 1, and for this year, we are also introducing the Women’s 2s Development squad for those who would like to try out team competitions in a more relaxed setting!

The club also has a close relationship with Birmingham Fencing Club, providing us access to fantastic coaching, world-class equipment, and ties to the wider fencing community.

Inclusion, Accessibility and Disability Practices

The Fencing Club prioritises inclusivity by integrating BUCS fencers and beginners into the same Monday training sessions. This approach helps bridge the gap between experienced fencers and newcomers, fostering a supportive learning environment. Encouraging interactions between different skill levels ensures that new members feel welcomed and included.

The club successfully applied for and received funding from the Alumni Impact Fund, which has been used to purchase additional chest protectors, allowing more women to participate comfortably. Additional funds were allocated for soft covers for chest protectors, ensuring that beginners can compete without financial burden. Additionally, the club is exploring partnerships with other universities to introduce wheelchair fencing, further expanding accessibility options.
