2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES AT SPORT & FITNESS

Everything you need to know about how the Games relates to University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness.

KEY DATES

The Sport & Fitness club will be closed completely to members from Thursday 21 July to Monday 8 August inclusive. During this time, Birmingham 2022 will manage the facilities as the Hockey & Squash Centre for the Games. All members of UoB Sport & Fitness regardless of membership category will have access to Tiverton Gym, with additional programmes and services available.

There are some variations in when individual facilities will close and re-open. Please find more information below about what alternative activities we will have available during these times.

Gym & Swimming Pool

The gym and pool will be unavailable to members from Thursday 21 July until we re-open on Tuesday 9 August at 6am.

Squash Courts

As squash is one of the sports we are hosting, the courts will be handed over to the Games slightly earlier, on Monday 18 July, so the last court bookings will be for Sunday 17 July. The squash courts will re-open on Sunday 14 August at 7am.

Class Studios

The studios are being used for a number of different functions during Games time, from player lounges to back-office operations. Therefore, there will be no classes at the Sport & Fitness club from Monday 18 July until Sunday 14 August. There may be some studio changes for the first week of classes, as some studios are handed back to us later but we aim to offer the range of classes you would normally expect during summer vacation. As normal, the full class timetable will then be launched from Monday 26 September, in line with the new academic year.

DURING THE GAMES

Continue your workouts for free at Tiverton Gym

All Sport & Fitness members are invited to use our other gym facility in Selly Oak, Tiverton Gym for free during the Games. During the academic year, this is a student-only facility, however, the Games take place during University summer vacation when this gym is usually closed.

This gym will be available for you to use from Thursday 21 July until Monday 8 August 2022 except Saturday 30 July. This is due to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games marathon race taking place on the surrounding roads.

Tiverton Gym is a gym-only facility, with a range of Technogym equipment and a free-weights area. The gym will be staffed by some familiar faces you will recognise from Sport & Fitness. You can explore Tiverton Gym via the virtual tour.

SPORT & FITNESS TRANSFORMED

As we prepare to host the Hockey and Squash events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, our Game-Changing Facility will be transformed.

The University of Birmingham, an Official Partner of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, will be playing a key role in delivering an outstanding international sporting event that will focus the eyes of the world on our city, our region and our world-leading reputation for excellence.

In addition to being a Tier 1 sponsor, the University is:

  • hosting the Principal Athlete’s Village;

  • the official competition venue for hockey and squash;

  • a training venue for athletics and swimming;

  • the official catering providers, for athletes, Games family, spectators and workforce.

As a result, the University’s Edgbaston campus will host over 3,500 athletes, their teams and technical officials, as well as 5,000+ Games and University workforce for the duration of the Games. We will also welcome more than 15,000 spectators onto our campus each day.
