Activities
It’s important to us that everyone is as safe and comfortable as possible whilst on activities. Therefore, we have a well-stocked kit store full of all the wet weather and technical gear that you might need.
Abseiling
What is abseiling?! Simply it is using a rope to descend a cliff. It originates from mountaineering, but we use it as a unique, exciting, and genuine challenge. We use several locations which are often within local disused mining quarries, these are great places to visit and explore – so even if you’re not sure about the abseiling, you will have a great time.
This is a long half day session, requires a minibus ride and around 20 minutes of walking to get to the venues.
Abseiling can feel intimidating but it’s good to know that it is very safe. Rest assured that we will never force you to do something that you do not want to. Come thinking about how to support others within your team and how to create a good atmosphere for success. Abseiling is very inclusive and enjoyable for all
Good footwear is essential and also an outfit suited to the weather.
Canoeing
Canoeing is an inclusive and adaptable way to get out on the lake. We can change what we do and how we do it to have a great journey whatever the ability or weather. We have tandem canoes: paddled with one or two others and we have giant canoes which are large, and stable enough to look after an entire group of 10. Given enough wind, we might also sail our canoes whilst rafted together, to make a unique downwind journey. Warm clothes, waterproofs, and wellingtons are the perfect choice of clothing.
Gorge Walking
In the UK Gorge Walking, Ghyll Scrambling and Canyoning are often the same thing.
Often quoted as the best thing they did all week, students and staff find this activity exhilarating and engaging. We tend to use one main gorge with lots of options there to cater for different abilities and needs.
Effectively clambering up a rocky river with some waterfalls, you can expect to get wet to around your waist. If you want to swim or even jump in then this is possible, but we will not make you do it. The gorge is a short minibus drive away, so we get ready at the centre wearing lots of kit, including wetsuits.
Hill walking
With some iconic Lake District hills and mountains on the doorstep, we often spend time in and around this beautiful environment. This might be as a whole day or as a taster, catering for all abilities and speeds. Journeys may involve a summit but often visit hidden spots such as waterfalls, mines or woodland instead. We kit you out in quality equipment to keep you safe and comfortable but feel free to bring your own if it’s up to scratch. Bring a sense of adventure, fresh legs and plenty of snacks and laughs to keep spirits high.
Kayaking
Kayaking is a great way to get independence on the lake; we have single person and two person options. We will often go for a journey, get a good view, learn some new skills, and play some games. Our kayaks turn more easily than our canoes making them more agile and speedy, this means we may spend a bit longer covering basic skills and how to make your boat go where you want it to. It also means that it is a good idea to wear a wetsuit for kayaking.
Orienteering
Usually around the site or further afield in the extensive woodland next door, this rewarding task will often be used to earn points for another task or activity. Work as a team to find locations or compete as pairs to earn the highest score; we use Orienteering in many ways. The woods can be very wet and muddy, so we recommend borrowing a pair of walking boots and any other clothing to keep comfortable from our kit store.
Raft building
A great bit of constructive chaos! Earn some points, collet some equipment and build a raft. Hope that your raft floats and complete the task/race/game(s) on the lake. A great way to have fun and work together. Depending on time of year, you might choose to wear a wetsuit, and we will provide you with other essential safety equipment too.
Scrambling
Some might say that this is the best way to reach the top of a hill and get a good view! Similar to rock climbing; Scrambling links simple rock sections together that are at a level that you do not always require a rope. This allows the whole group to move fluidly and have a unique adventure together.
A half day activity, we have multiple options from beginner to advanced just a short minibus drive away. Good footwear is essential and an outfit to suit the weather. We will also provide everyone with technical equipment including a climbing harness and helmet.
Rock Climbing
Did you know that indoor climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK? Why not try rock climbing outside? We use several venues, from beginner to challenging. Typically, we will walk to the cliff, make a base camp and our instructors will rig some ropes to try various routes. Expect to try simple movement challenges, learn how to put a harness on and how to safely hold the ropes (no strength needed, just technique), all whilst being looked after by our experienced and friendly instructors. Â
Some will want to try to reach the top of every possible line, whilst others will be happier perfecting lower moves, there is no expectation/ push to go any higher than where you are comfortable.Â
Come with enthusiasm and a willingness to try it, being happy to support and look after others in your group. All technical equipment is supplied, including a harness and helmet. Â

Sailing
We have an amazing fleet of sailing dinghies at the centre and a stunning lake to play on. Weather permitting (of course!) you can learn the basics of this complex and rewarding sport. To begin with we will often pair up in a boat, focusing on one or two simple tasks. Soon you will be flying along wowed by the mountain scenery. There is a chance of falling in the water, but our safety boat will be with to make sure you are always ok. We will also wear wetsuits and other protective gear handed out from our kit store. We also have The Hawk: a 20ft sailing dinghy with capacity for 6. This can be a great introduction to sailing, able to sail gently and calmly, or at full tilt, all with an instructor onboard.Â
Stand Up Paddle boarding
SUP or Stand Up Paddleboarding can be a bit of a paradox! A sensationally calm and immersive experience interrupted by moments of falling in and having a swim!! We have individual SUPs, great for having a go and being independent, and we have giant SUPs, big enough to cater for an entire group together. Don’t be confused by the name, you do not need to stand up, kneeling and sitting are completely normal and sometimes the wisest method. We do strongly recommend a warm full-length wetsuit though!Â
Swimming
The lakeshore is ‘a stone’s throw’ downhill from the centre, making it a fantastic resource in which to have fun. We might plan to take a dip during activity time as part of another session (e.g. kayaking) but only with your enthusiasm and consent; we will never force you to get wet if you do not want to. You are also welcome to use our swim floats in your own time for an early morning/ after session dip. We do this having given you some good ideas about how to keep safe. As the lake can get dangerously cold over the winter, swimming might not be appropriate, please check with us on arrival.
