2023/24 STUDENT ROLES

The University of Birmingham Sport marketing department supports the University’s 58 sports clubs, sport events, participation programmes and sport scholars as well as the promotion of the Sport & Fitness club.

 

To support this work, we are looking for enthusiastic students who have a passion and knowledge for sport to promote our services and facilities and become an ambassador for living a healthy, active lifestyle at University.

Current Opportunities

We are looking for a creative and proactive student with a talent for creating engaging video content across our UB Sport and Sport and Fitness channels.

Tasks

  • Create TikTok style short videos for the marketing team to share across social channels
  • Collate content into videos using assets stored in the Marketing shared drive
  • Liaise with Brand Ambassadors and Photography Ambassador to capture relevant content for your video projects
  • Bring fun/trending ideas to the marketing team, focusing on upcoming events across our student audience and our Sport and Fitness members
  • Boosting engagement on our social media channels by researching the latest digital trends in the world of sport and beyond

Skills required 

  • Proficient in video creation and editing together content
  • A sound awareness of how different social media platforms work and ability to identify best practices for higher performing content
  • Proactive in researching trends and inspiration to replicate across our channels
  • Reliable, attending scheduled activity and logging completed hours in ambassador spreadsheet
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to adhere to brand guidelines when creating and sharing content
  • Time management – managing multiple projects a week and meeting deadlines

Commitment

This role requires you to complete 60 hours during term-time from September 2023 – June 2024. Week to week your hours may vary depending on how many events and activities we have taking place. It will be the ambassador’s responsibility to keep track of hours on our spreadsheet log – which will be reviewed by the Marketing team at the end of each term. A degree of flexibility is required for support on shorter notice events, although this will be avoided as much as possible with a pre-planned calendar

  • Attend review meetings across each term with the marketing team

Start Date: Week commencing 18 September 2023 (with induction and training to take place a week prior).

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic student who has a passion for photography to help promote our clubs, services and facilities.

N.B. Access to your own equipment is desirable, although we do have some equipment if required.

 

Tasks

  • Attend a select number of university matches in the British University & College Sport (BUCS) leagues and competitions per week. These will take place on campus, mostly on Wednesday afternoons
  • Arrange separate photography with clubs where requested
  • Coverage of all specified events that have been organised by UoB Sport & Fitness – this includes all BUCS Super Series events, along with other student and member events on campus
  • Assistance with the promotion of student sport events, which may include photoshoots to be used in the design of promotional materials
  • General photography of Sport & Fitness facilities
  • Photography of participation programmes such as classes, Try A Sport session and Campus League, as well as one-day events taking place throughout the year
  • Coverage of a number of off-campus events and external events throughout the year
  • Meeting deadlines to submit your content to the marketing department with clear labelling
  • Occasionally you will be required to take video content at certain fixtures and events

Skills needed

  • Some experience of high-quality photography, with sports photography experience desirable but not required
  • Some experience of videography and a sound knowledge of how to storyboard and create video content for marketing and social media campaigns
  • Enthusiastic individual with knowledge of / an interest in sport and fitness at the University
  • Time management and the ability to work independently
  • Reliable, attending scheduled activity and logging completed hours in ambassador spreadsheet

We are looking for four dedicated students to represent UB Sport and Fitness and promote our offer across the University and beyond.

Tasks

  • Attending and contributing to events organised by UoB Sport & Fitness including Welcome Week, Sport & Fitness Fair, Open Days, Applicant Visit Days and one-off events
  • Attending and contributing to specified events hosted by student clubs, including BUCS Super Series events
  • General promotion of UoB Sport & Fitness across campus and halls of residence
  • Attendance, coverage and promotion of university matches in BUCS competitions, including gathering content for our social media channels
  • Where requested, wearing mascot Rory the lion costume for events and content
  • Assisting with market research and delivering focus groups when needed
  • Support with live streaming sport matches and events (training and equipment is provided)

It will be the ambassador’s responsibility to keep track of hours on our spreadsheet log – which will be reviewed by the Marketing team at the end of each term. A degree of flexibility is required for support on shorter notice events, although this will be avoided as much as possible with a pre-planned calendar.
  • Availability most Wednesday afternoons to capture BUCS fixtures
  • Attend review meetings across each term with the marketing team

Start Date: Week commencing 18 September 2023 (with induction and training to take place a week prior).

 

We are looking for a proficient and engaging writer to build our weekly Sports Desk newsletter, updating club members, staff and coaches on the latest BUCS results and news.

Tasks

  • Structure and write the weekly Sports Desk email which is sent to all club members, UB Sport and Fitness staff and coaches every Thursday
  • Collaborate with Brand Ambassadors to identify content to feature in each edition
  • Use Campaign Monitor software to build email content and include external links
  • Identify key BUCS fixtures to highlight from the BUCS spreadsheet
  • Spend Thursday mornings in the Sports Marketing Office
  • Structure content received from the Communications Officer and find relevant imagery where not provided
  • Communicate with staff and students to obtain additional information where require

  • Proactive in communicating with relevant staff and students where extra information is needed

  • Able to stick to tight deadlines to ensure Sports Desk is circulated on time
