Student Club

With over 300 members and an active alumni community, Athletics & Cross Country is one of the largest and most successful clubs at the university.

At Birmingham, community and performance go hand in hand. Whether you’re new to the sport or chasing international medals, there’s something for everyone. Training sessions happen daily across all event groups and ability levels, with a World Class team of coaches tailoring sessions to suit your goals.

Most sessions take place at the university’s own track, with additional training at top facilities like the Alexander Stadium’s indoor HPC and local parks for cross country specific sessions. Members also benefit from extras like strength & conditioning classes and prehab sessions. The club proudly champions para-sport.

Club members can compete year-round, at all levels. We also host fixtures throughout the calendar including our popular Track & Field Series. The biggest events of the year are the BUCS Championships, which take place indoors and outdoors for track & field, as well as over cross country. The European Cross Country Championships are another major highlight of the endurance season, with UoB athletes winning nine medals at the most recent event.

One of the club’s standout opportunities is the Ivy League Exchange – a tradition that’s been running since 1962. Every two years, students travel to the U.S. to compete against (and stay with) athletes from Harvard, Yale, Cornell and UPenn, and in the years in between, we host them here in Birmingham. We’re excited to be hosting the next exchange in 2026.

There are plenty of ways to get involved in the club beyond training and competing. Whether it’s getting qualified as a coach or official, joining in with our varied socials, or volunteering on our student-run committee, everyone’s journey through the club is a little different. We also offer warm-weather and altitude training camps during key points in the season to support performance and progression.
