Our Club

UBWCC has three squads, ensuring opportunities for players of all abilities and experience levels. Our First Squad competes in outdoor BUCS, while our Second and Third Squads take part in local leagues and friendly fixtures throughout the year.

During the winter season, we also enter two teams into indoor BUCS competitions, with players selected from across the club. This provides additional opportunities for members to represent the University and compete throughout the academic year.

All three squads receive two training opportunities each week, including a whole-club training session and a squad-specific session. We also offer a dedicated weekly fielding session, available to all members during both semesters.

Trials for the First and Second Squads take place at the beginning of October. Players who are not selected are placed in the Third Squad, with flexibility throughout the year to ensure everyone is training and playing at the level that suits them best.

The 1st and 2nd squads train at Edgbaston on Sundays, with each squad receiving a 90-minute coached session from Girls Hit Harder. The 3rd squad trains at the Munrow Sports Arena.

Alongside cricket, we have a strong social side, with weekly socials and a range of events throughout the year. These include supporting our members playing for Warwickshire at Edgbaston during the summer, as well as fundraisers, charity events and activities with other University of Birmingham sports clubs. One example is our joint charity match with the Men’s Cricket Club, Red 4 Ruth.

UBWCC has a mix of volunteer and professional coaching across the club. Wednesday whole-club training and Sunday Third Squad sessions are supported by volunteer coaches, including players from the Men’s Cricket Club. The First and Second Squads receive paid coaching from Girls Hit Harder at their Sunday Edgbaston sessions. Weekly fielding sessions are led by our Performance Manager.

Inclusion, Accessibility and Disability Practices

The Women’s Cricket Club creates an inclusive and beginner-friendly environment where players of all skill levels feel welcome. Training times are flexible, offering sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and weekends to accommodate different commitments. The club celebrates cultural diversity by hosting events such as wearing colorful outfits for Diwali, fostering a sense of unity among members. Weekly socials, both sober and non-sober, provide opportunities for team bonding. Additionally, an inclusion officer hosts a weekly drop-in session for members to discuss any concerns, ensuring a supportive atmosphere.

To remove financial barriers, the club provides shared cricket kits, gloves (for both left- and right-handed players), bats, and sufficient cricket balls. This ensures that all members, regardless of financial background, can participate in training and matches without the need to purchase expensive equipment.
