Success for The University of Birmingham Lions at BUCs Midlands American Flag Football Tournament

The University of Birmingham Lions made history, competing in the first-ever Midlands BUCS Flag Football Tournament and coming home with a bronze medal.

Facing off against 10 other BUCS programmes in a highly competitive field, the Lions set the tone early in the round-robin stages, going undefeated with one draw and three impressive wins to secure a semi-final spot.

In a dramatic semi-final clash, Birmingham went toe-to-toe with Nottingham Trent in one of the games of the tournament, eventually falling in a triple overtime shootout, a testament to the quality and resilience shown by both sides. That set up a bronze medal game against University of Nottingham Gold, revisiting a matchup that had ended in a draw earlier in the day.

The Lions showed grit and composure, battling back from an early deficit to take the lead with two touchdowns and a successful extra point. With just 55 seconds remaining, Nottingham Gold responded with a touchdown to bring the score within one. Opting for a two-point conversion to win the game, their pass was broken up by a clutch defensive play, sealing a thrilling 13–12 victory for Birmingham and a bronze medal finish in their first ever BUCs Flag Football Tournament.

Congratulations to the MVP’s of the tournament:

  • Offensive MVP: James Gavin
  • Defensive MVP: Kye Hendrickson
  • Overall MVP: Angus Webber

Head Coach Wayne Hill said:

“I couldn’t be prouder of this group. To go undefeated in the group stages and then compete in games of that intensity shows the character and quality we have. The way the team responded in the bronze medal game—especially that final defensive stand—was outstanding. This is just the beginning for flag football at Birmingham.”

An incredible day for the programme, representing the University with pride and setting the standard for the future of BUCS Flag Football. Congratulations to all involved.
