UoB hosts UKA 10K showdown

The University of Birmingham was proud to host the UK Athletics 10,000m Championships last month as part of its annual Track & Field Festival, welcoming some of the country’s best endurance athletes to the iconic red track for a thrilling night of racing, atmosphere, and national glory.

Donnelly and McDermott take British titles

In front of an energised crowd, Calli Thackery and Patrick Dever delivered stunning performances to take the wins, but it was Abbie Donnelly and Cairess McDermott who claimed the coveted titles of British Champions, having finished as the top UK athletes in their respective races.

Full results are available via the T10-1-2 UKA Men’s 10000m Championship results page and the British Athletics event report.

World Championship dreams on the line

With places for this summer’s World Championships in Tokyo on the line, the racing was fast and competitive, with athletes pushing themselves to the limit in pursuit of qualification. The event attracted a passionate crowd of spectators, creating a buzz that fuelled the performances on the track and made for an unforgettable evening.

A Message from Luke Gunn

Luke Gunn, Head of Student Sport at the University, said:

“It was an honour to host the UK 10,000m Championships within our Track & Field Festival at the University last week.

After stepping in to host this previously during covid in 2021, we were delighted to bring it back and have crowds come along and cheer on the athletes attempting to qualify for the World Championships in Tokyo later this summer.

This is the second of three UK Championships being hosted in Birmingham in 2025 and we are pleased to be continually trusted by British Athletics to deliver such key competitions for the sport, especially in the University’s 125th year anniversary.”

A festival to remember

The atmosphere, the elite talent on display, and the seamless organisation were captured brilliantly by photographer Molly Davey, whose work brought the event to life.

As the University continues to establish itself as a trusted hub for major athletics events, we are proud to support British athletes and showcase the world-class facilities here on campus, especially during our 125 anniversary year.
