UoB helps launch the Keely Klassic
On Saturday 15 February, Birmingham played host to something truly special – the inaugural Keely Klassic, a brand-new addition to the World Indoor Tour Bronze series. Designed to captivate a new generation of athletics fans, this exciting event brought together world-class talent, a buzzing crowd, and a powerful mission: to inspire young people to fall in love with the sport.
And it delivered in spectacular style.
At the centre of this vision is none other than Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson, who set out to create an event that doesn’t just showcase elite performance, but also feels inclusive, energetic, and future-focused. Judging by the glowing feedback from athletes, spectators and online viewers, it’s safe to say the first edition of the Keely Klassic did just that.

World class competition on display
Athletes from over a dozen nations took part, many of whom would go on to compete at the European Indoor Championships – and some are now preparing for the World Indoor Championships. Among them was University of Birmingham alumna Georgia Hunter-Bell, proudly continuing her journey on the international stage.
The Klassic didn’t just showcase world-class sport – it created a space for emerging talent and set a powerful tone for inclusive and inspiring athletics events to come.
The University of Birmingham’s role

The University of Birmingham played a central role in supporting the delivery of the event through key partnerships and student involvement. As an event partner, UoB provided athlete and official accommodation through Edgbaston Park Hotel and Peter Scott House, offering a high-quality base just minutes from the venue.
Later that evening, the city-centre Exchange – part of the University’s growing presence in Birmingham – hosted a vibrant post-event reception. Just a short walk from the Utilita Arena, it provided the perfect setting to celebrate the day’s success and connect with key stakeholders.
Students at the centre of the action

Even more impressively, the event was powered behind the scenes by a brilliant team of undergraduate students from UB Sport and the Athletics Club. Working alongside Meet Director Andy Paul (Athletics Talent Hub Manager at UoB), these students took on a wide range of responsibilities – from athlete support and infield operations to media engagement and programme sales. Their enthusiasm and work ethic were second to none, and they represented the University with pride throughout the day.
Their professionalism, commitment and energy were praised by event organisers and athletes alike. It was a brilliant example of how UoB students gain real-world experience that enhances their personal and professional development.
A bright future for the Klassic – and UoB Sport
With plans already underway for year two, the Keely Klassic is set to become a key date in the UK athletics calendar. And for the University of Birmingham, it’s another example of how we are shaping the future of sport – not just through athlete performance, but by creating meaningful experiences, building impactful partnerships, and giving students opportunities to shine.
Here’s to many more Klassic moments to come.
