Birmingham strikes gold at BUCS Big Wednesday
The University of Birmingham delivered a flawless performance at BUCS Big Wednesday, claiming five national titles in a day of dominance. Women’s Fencing and all four Squash teams rose to the occasion, producing championship-winning performances to bring home five gold medals on the biggest stage of university sport.
Fencing: National Trophy Champions
The Women’s Fencing team showcased their skill and determination, securing the National Trophy with a 135-109 victory. Their preparation and teamwork paid off as they controlled the match, sealing an emphatic win and a historic moment for Birmingham Fencing.
Co-captain Kylie Savoye reflected on the achievement:
“This is an incredible moment for us. We’ve worked so hard for this, and to lift the National Trophy at Big BUCS Wednesday is just amazing. Fencing isn’t always in the spotlight, so this is a fantastic way to showcase the sport and celebrate our passion for it.”
The team was also supported by Terri, their beloved fencing mascot, whose luck has extened to every match they have had this season.
Squash: Clean sweep of golds
Birmingham Squash put in a dominant display, with all four teams claiming gold in their respective finals:
- Men’s 1st and Women’s 1st teams proved their class in the National Championship Finals, overcoming strong opposition to win the top university squash titles.
- Men’s 2nd and Women’s 2nd teams followed suit, capturing the National Trophy Finals, demonstrating the strength in depth of Birmingham Squash.
Head of Performance Squash, Jon Tate, praised the teams:
“To have all four teams win at BUCS Big Wednesday is an incredible achievement. The commitment, skill, and resilience of these players have been outstanding all season, and today’s results are a true reflection of that. Birmingham Squash has a proud legacy, and this just adds another chapter to it.”
