Wheelchair Basketball: FAQ’s and interview with coach Nichola

Whether you are curious about the rules, equipment, who can play or how wheelchair basketball differs from running basketball, our FAQ’s will answer your questions. We clear up any misconceptions and highlight why wheelchair basketball is a fast, exciting game and can be enjoyed through social sport or active residences.

Q&A with coach Nichola:

How and when did you get into wheelchair basketball?

I got into wheelchair basketball in my second year of university (4 years ago) by attending a community ‘give-it-a-go’ session. A coach from a local team – Warwickshire Bears – was also at this session and invited me to join their club!

Were there any challenges or obstacles when you first started playing, or along the way?

I lacked a lot of confidence when I started playing, which made it quite difficult to fully immerse myself in the sport at first. But everyone was so welcoming and encouraging which really helped me open up while improving in the sport!

What do you like most about playing?

I really enjoy the team aspect of it. It’s exciting getting to know fellow team-mates and understand the different ways that everyone plays. It really adds something to the whole sporting experience!

Can you tell us about a highlight or special moment playing wheelchair basketball for you?

Some of my favourite experiences are at Women’s League – which is a league for teams of women only! It’s a lot of fun going away for a weekend to play with some great people!

What would you say to someone who was apprehensive about giving it a try?

It’s a very welcoming environment – most people that come to the sessions have never tried wheelchair basketball before! It’s all for fun, and a different way to get some exercise!

Is there anything specific or different about the equipment you use for wheelchair basketball?

The court, hoop height, and ball are all the same as running basketball – the only difference is that you’re sat down!! We use specially designed wheelchairs that help you move around the court effectively. The main difference between basketball chairs and everyday wheelchairs is that the big wheels are slanted – this allows easier movement and balance!

Are you planning to continue playing after you graduate?

I will continue to keep playing for my team, as well taking part in some coaching experiences!

Frequently Asked Questions:

How many people play on each team?

Just like running basketball, there are five players per team on court, plus substitutes.

I’ve never played basketball before, do I have to be good at basketball already?

Not at all! It’s a very adaptive sport, so it is made for all abilities. It’s more about having fun!

Can non wheelchair users play? Are you sure I’m not taking up a space from someone who is disabled?

Yes, everyone is welcome in these sessions and we encourage participation from non-wheelchair users. By taking part in the Wheelchair Basketball sessions, you are actively supporting the sport to grow and providing opportunity for wheelchair users to regularly take part in accessible sport.

Are the teams mixed gender?

Yes

How long does a game last?

A game lasts 40 minutes – split into 10 minute quarters.

Do I have to commit to playing every week?

No, the sessions are flexible and there is no need to come to every session, although you may want to once you try it out!

I don’t have very good upper body strength, will I be able to play?

Yes of course, most people will find that they build up strength as they play. The sessions are open to all abilities, whatever your fitness level you are welcome to join and have fun.
