UoB Swimming Club celebrates landmark season of success
The University of Birmingham Swimming Club is finishing the year on a high after a series of standout achievements both in and out of the pool. From international coaching recognition and elite selections to record-breaking BUCS performances and successful fundraising, it has been a season to remember for everyone involved
Gary Humpage joins GB Coaching environment
Recently named Joint Coach of the Year, Gary Humpage has been invited by British Swimming to attend the prestigious Setti Colli meet in Rome. This event forms part of Italy’s World Championships selection process and Gary will join in an observational capacity, gaining insight into how the national team operates at the highest level.
The experience will support his coaching development and further strengthen his involvement in international swimming, including continued support for Olympian Ollie Morgan. It marks an exciting step for both Gary and the wider programme at Birmingham.
£4,900 raised at club-hosted meet
On 31 May, the club hosted a hugely successful meet, welcoming over 200 swimmers from across the country, including a number of alumni. The event raised £4,900, providing a significant boost to club funds while also giving Birmingham athletes the chance to race in a home environment.
Building on this success, plans are already in motion for the newly launched Steve’s Team and University of Birmingham Masters Meet, set to return in 2025.

Performance squad heads to Spain
In preparation for this summer’s National Championships in Sheffield, 40 swimmers from the University of Birmingham’s performance and competitive squads will head to Calella, just north of Barcelona, in mid-June for a one-week training camp. The camp will offer swimmers the chance to train intensively in a focused, high-performance environment, make final technical adjustments, and build team momentum ahead of one of the most important meets on the domestic calendar. It also provides a valuable opportunity for athletes to sharpen both their physical and mental preparation in the lead-up to Nationals.

Five swimmers selected for GB v Canada dual

Five Birmingham swimmers have been selected to represent Great Britain in a new head-to-head meet between British and Canadian universities, taking place in Loughborough on 3 and 4 July.
Congratulations to Nellie Clark (breaststroke), Cam Tugcetin (breaststroke), Adrian Ting (freestyle), Ellen Bagley (breaststroke) and Sam Cooke (butterfly and individual medley) on their selection. This is the first time the meet has ever taken place and highlights Birmingham’s growing presence on the international stage.
Record-breaking BUCS season
The club has just completed its best BUCS season in history. The first team were crowned BUCS champions, winning the top division. The second team claimed silver in Division 2, and the third team earned bronze in the same division. This was the first time a B-team had reached that level and medalled, competing against top A-teams from across the UK.
It was also the club’s highest ever BUCS points total in swimming, underlining the strength and depth of the programme.
These achievements reflect the exceptional commitment of the swimmers, coaches, and support teams at the University of Birmingham. With momentum continuing to build, the future of UoB Swimming looks brighter than ever.
