A record-breaking day at the Great Birmingham Run 2025
A special report from our Participation Officer, Sophie Mallinson
While the Great Birmingham Run was a true team effort, we couldn’t tell the story without hearing from the person who led the charge. Our brilliant Sports Participation Officer, Sophie Mallinson, played a key role in making this year’s event such a success — so we asked her to share her experience in her own words.

The Great Birmingham Run 2025 saw Team UoB’s biggest turnout yet—read about the day’s highlights, amazing atmosphere, and inspiring achievements.
A shirt to remember
When the #TeamUoB Instagram t-shirt vote chose black, we’ll admit—we were a little nervous. If the sun made a surprise appearance, would we all regret embracing democracy in the heat?
Thankfully, despite a brief early morning shower, the weather turned out perfect for running.
We could not have asked for a better backdrop to a brilliant day!
Starting strong with Rory
The day kicked off with pre-race photos alongside everyone’s favourite mascot, Rory, before we made our way to the start line. While #TeamUoB’s official wave was at 10:32am, it was amazing to spot so many of our runners proudly wearing their shirts—both this year’s edition and classics from previous years—in the earlier waves too.
A city united in support
The atmosphere at the Great Birmingham Run never disappoints. With supporters lining the streets, the city came alive to cheer on everyone taking part. Seeing such strong representation from the University of Birmingham community—current students, staff, alumni, and Sport & Fitness members—was truly inspiring. Having you all together in one space is always a highlight of our year.
However you did it—you smashed it!
Whether you were running or walking, completing the 10K or the Half Marathon, fundraising for a cause or just pushing your own limits, taking part in and completing the Great Birmingham Run is a huge achievement. We are so proud of each and every one of you—even if you only signed up for the free t-shirt!
