University of Birmingham to Host UK Athletics 10,000m Championships
We’re thrilled to announce that the University of Birmingham will be hosting the UK Athletics 10,000m Championships on Saturday 14 June 2025. This prestigious event will also serve as the World Trials, providing British athletes with a vital opportunity to secure qualification standards for the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team ahead of the 2025 World Championships.
This marks the return of elite distance running to our Athletics Track, which previously staged the Tokyo Olympic Games trials in 2021. That event saw some incredible performances and played a key role in the careers of top athletes, including Eilish McColgan. We’re excited to provide the same platform once again, supporting those striving to represent Great Britain on the world stage.
A Message from the Head of Performance Sport
Luke Gunn, Head of Performance Sport at the University of Birmingham, expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the event, highlighting the University’s ongoing commitment to supporting elite athletics:
“The University of Birmingham is ecstatic to be hosting the British 10,000m Championships this year, particularly as the institution celebrates its 125th anniversary. Birmingham is rapidly establishing itself as a key sporting destination, and we are delighted to be one of three venues in the city hosting British Championships in 2025 as part of the build-up to the European Championships in 2026.
“With the brilliant ‘Night of 10,000m PBs’ taking a well-earned rest next year, we are proud to step in, just as we did during the pandemic, when the University hosted the European 10,000m Cup in a one-off event that helped launch, among others, Eilish McColgan into an incredible 2021 and 2022 season.
“We know just how crucial these opportunities are for athletes chasing the tough World Championship qualification standards, so we are delighted to support UK Athletics in creating a fast and vibrant environment for those striving to reach the world stage. We hope you will join us in June and help contribute to an electric atmosphere for all our runners.”
A Hub for Elite Endurance Racing
With world-class athletics facilities and a strong reputation as a centre for high-performance sport, the University of Birmingham is an ideal venue for this championship. The 10,000m Championships will feature elite men’s and women’s races, with the following proposed entry standards:
- Women’s A race: 33:00
- Women’s B race: 34:20
- Men’s A race: 28:45
- Men’s B race: 29:30
Chris Jones, UK Athletics’ Head of Endurance Strategy, emphasised the importance of returning to the University of Birmingham for this event:
“We are looking forward to this event, especially as our last visit to this venue produced some fantastic performances.
“Thanks go to Luke Gunn and the team at the University of Birmingham for hosting the championships. The endurance community in Birmingham is sure to bring an incredible atmosphere to the event and help push athletes towards achieving those all-important times.”
