This year, we will be showcasing several games across a range of sports to encourage students, staff and our local community to come to campus and cheer on our teams during specific British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) fixtures, as part of our BUCS Super Series! With the games happening right on our doorstep, it’s the perfect opportunity to experience top-level student sport in our fantastic facilities – so read on to see what events are coming up, and be part of the pride!
SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2019 4.30PM – xpLosION
Kicking off the BUCS Super Series is the legendary American Football showcase event, xpLosION. This year, the Birmingham Lions take on the Hertfordshire Hurricanes on the Bournbrook 3G pitch (the green one!), so come along for an evening of American Football, a performance from the cheerleading squad – the Pussycats – and fireworks! In addition, the club are using the event to raise awareness of the fantastic Guild of Students campaign Not On, which looks to tackle sexual harassment and works towards a safe and supportive environment on campus.
WEDNESDAY 27 NOVEMBER 2019 FROM 2.15PM – UpRoar
Following a very successful 2018/19 season, Lacrosse are back with a double header of the Men’s and Women’s first teams on Wednesday 27 November. Come along to the Bournbrook pitches at 2.15pm and 4.15pm to watch the women and men in action, and enjoy a performance from our cheerleaders at half time during the men’s game!
The club are also supporting the Rainbow Laces campaign during the event, which aims to stop homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia in sport. Celebrate our LGBTQ+ community with them by donning your own rainbow laces in solidarity!
WEDNESDAY 22 JANUARY 2020 FROM 2PM – Engage
Established in 2015, Engage is one of the top spectator events in the Rugby calendar. Having finished second in the BUCS Premier League in the 2018/19 season – the best ever finish to date for the squad – and edging out Bishop Burton by 23-20 at last year’s event, the M1 team are looking to continue their success into this year, and will face Newcastle on 22 January. Come along for a whole afternoon of rugby on the Bournbrook 3G, starting with the M3 vs M4 in their league match at 2pm, followed by the W1 against Leeds Beckett at 4pm, and ending with M1 at 6pm. Get your woolly hats on and come and support your Lions!
WEDNESDAY 26 FEBRUARY 2020 – Intercept
Last year, the W1 team got all the way to the final on BUCS Big Wednesday against the University of Hertfordshire, and this year they’re back and hungry for the first place title! Including many players from the Wasps U21 squad, and with the new coaching dream team of Tamsin Greenway and Sophie Masterson, watch the 1s in action in the BUCS Championship quarter final from 7pm in the Munrow Arena, in their campaign to the top spot.
